This is a fascinating book in the tradition and format of Seeing Trees. The author is different but the photographer is the same. The author presents the different seed types, from fruits and vegetables, weeds and wildflowers, tree nuts and seeds, pinecones, cotton, and whirligigs. She discusses the characteristics and traits of seeds, such as hairy, poisonous, sticky, smelly, prickly, hard or soft, encased, etc. She also discusses the function of these traits, such as discouraging predators, dispersing with the wind, consumption by birds and animals, protection from drought, ease of pollination, incubation, hibernation, etc. The photography is even more captivating than that in Seeing Trees, as it is impossible to identify the parent plant by merely looking at the seed. Many of them even look alien. It is, therefore, more difficult to choose which plants to post here. Even if you have only a passing fancy for botany, you will find this book to be intriguing because of the photographs.
