I got this specific model/brand a few months ago because it was recommended by America’s Test Kitchen and it works great! Easy to use, easy to clean! I have only used it for guacamole and have no complaints, but definitely is strong enough to crush spices or whatever. It definitely seems like high quality material that I expect to last me years! This is one of those things that not everyone needs; but, if you cook for the joy of it, this is something you’ll want. I enjoy the full sensory experience of grinding my spices, making garlic into a paste, etc. I find cooking to be a calming activity, that not only feeds my sense of calm, but my body. When I cook for others it’s an expression of how much I care about the people who eat it. This is a tool in my kitchen I turn to more than I thought I would when I bought it.Then why 4 stars? Mine came with a chunk of granite missing from the base, and I didn’t notice it until after I seasoned it. At that point, I just didn’t want to deal with the hassle of a return.Functionally, it’s awesome. Aesthetically, it’s a bit of a let down due to the crater at the base.I've had this for a couple of months now and I'm very happy with it. The pestle is what sets it apart from others. The pestle is extremely comfortable in my hand, and it's heavy enough and shaped in a way that makes it effortless to use. It's great for crushing nuts, and it takes very little elbow-grease to mill things. The mortar is heavy, which is good, as it doesn't slide around or fall over. The color is kind of like an avacado, and i like the way it looks. The one thing that surprised me a little was the capacity of the mortar. I thought it would handle more (but admittedly I don't have much experience with these). It's not a problem, so I'm not disappointed or frustrated. To give people an idea of what to expect, if I'm milling something kind of soft and slippery, like flax seed, it will only handle about one tablespoon at a time. Putting more than that in the mortar causes the flax seed to grind against itself, not the mortar, and the seed simply won't mill that way. Not long after I bought this, I saw Costco carrying a mortar and pestle for less than half the price. I tested it out a little, and I would much rather have this one, mostly because the pestle is so much more powerful and comfortable to use. So, this is getting heavy use in my home, and I am very satisfied with the purchase. This is a serious kitchen tool. VERY hefty, so much so that I’m not sure how to wash it out—handling it with soap and water feels like a recipe for disaster. It does definitely get the job done as far as grinding spices, but I wish I had gotten something a little more manageable.I've wanted a mortar and pestle for some time. Purchased this one, more expensive than most, but much more solid than ones I've tried in stores. Works well, doesn't slide around. This item was purchased for use, not show. It needed seasoning but they all do. I recommend the dry rice method. Its heavy duty, well crafted, and worth every penny. An excellent mortar and pestle, with an ideal textured surface that breaks down herbs and spices efficiently. Deep enough to keep ingredients from escaping, and wide enough to accommodate large amounts. Anyone making pesto or any spice blends will be very pleased.Follow the directions for conditioning before use and you are ready to go.There is much debate on cleaning on the internet, including some that warn not to use soap. I have used dish soap and a brush for many years and, provided that I rinse it well with warm water find that it effectively removes the oil that accumulates in use and ensures no "carryover" from your previous use.Dry with a clean cloth (not a paper towel) and let sit to air dry thoroughly. This is huge! And heavy! But it works well because of those features. It can handle a good amount of spices, or herbs, or whatever you need to grind, without moving and without everything flying out of the mortar. The pestel is large and easy to handle. The bottom is quite rough so I recommend you place a towel underneath when using to prevent scratching your countertop. Been eyeing this for a while, as Cook's Illustrated rates it highly. Was glad to see it finally available in Canada and at a good price to boot. This thing just pulverizes peppercorns, cumin, coriander... I find myself using it instead of the coffee grinder I have dedicated for spices... it's just so easy to use.
